Art for mental health

In 2022 I was hit by a sudden loss of sight in my left eye after suffering optic nerve damage. After over 30 years as an artist, illustrator and art educator the inability to carry out some everyday tasks let alone carry on as an art educator became extremely difficult. As I came to terms with my new life whilst undergoing therapy turned to my art as vent to release my frustrations.

My latest body of work explores the profound parallels between the raw, untamed power of the natural world and the complexities of mental health. Drawing on the ocean as a central metaphor, capture the shifting, often turbulent emotional landscape of the mind, its depths, currents, and moments of stillness. Through this lens, the sea becomes both a force of intensity and a space of reflection, embodying the struggle, resilience, and fluidity inherent in human experience.
